During Solomon’s reign as King of Israel, (970-931 B.C.), his kingdom enjoyed tremendous prosperity. He traded with other nations and built the great Temple in Jerusalem. His father was King David and his mother was Bathseba.
He was only about 20 years old when he was crowned king. Upon taking the throne, Solomon made sacrifices and prayed to the Lord. This pleased God very much so He appeared to Solomon in a dream. God said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." (I Kings 3:5) Solomon asked for "a discerning heart to govern the people and to distinguish between right and wrong." (I Kings 3:9) And God blessed Solomon with great wisdom.
